A large heart painted on the cheek recalls Vallières’ second birthday, when her mother covered her face in lipstick hearts and she spent the day eating strawberries in nothing but a diaper. She doesn't remember the day itself, but she remembers—or imagines—the feeling: love, softness, celebration, and being completely adored.
UNBECOMING PART 1 marks a new direction in Amélie Vallières’ practice: the culmination of more than six months of research, experimentation, and a growing desire to move beyond the traditional portrait. These works explore the messy, tender, chaotic process of becoming ourselves: the identities we inherit, the ones we outgrow, and the ones we are still learning to inhabit. Part 1 lays the foundation for the larger UNBECOMING collection, with Part 2 to be unveiled in spring 2027.
